Who is Metro Search and Rescue
A reserve unit in Nelson Mandela Bay working under the Disaster Management Center
Our core focus is to assist with any disaster. We, however, do assist with missing person cases due to the high demand. Our Urban Search and Rescue team assist the state with any emergency service function. The unit works with the SA Police, Fire Department, Metro Police, Traffic Department and various other state role-players. We are bases in Port Elizabeth and operate from the Municipal Disaster Management Center.
how busy are we?
Between January 2019 and November 2019 the unit was involved with 57 search operations.
Most of our recent operations include missing persons, run away children, suicidal persons, missing persons with medical conditions as well as the odd abduction or kidnapping.

Facts about the unit:
- Disaster Management legislation allows the local municipality to provide members will all relevant training. This includes fire fighting, accident response, emergency disaster response and law enforcement
- We have 15 members who are vetted and registered with the Disaster Management Center
- The unit's maximum number of members is 15. This allows our small team to remain focused on our core functions
- This is a reserve, or voluntary, unit. Members are not paid and include average working, and business people, who live in the metro
- As part of the Disaster Management regulation, the municipality has to provide members will all relevant training which will include fire fighting, accident response, emergency disaster response and, at a later stage, law enforcement course
