Missing Person
What to do
- Contact 10111 as soon as possible – do not wait 24 hours, the sooner the better
- As per both police and Search and Rescue protocol, a missing person case, or report – known as an SAPS 55 – has to be completed in order for all essential rescue groups to be alerted
- When reporting the matter to the police, ensure you have all needed details on hand
- Details of the missing person include: last known location, clothing description, a picture, medical history and vehicle registration papers – if applicable
- The SA Police member taking the docket will alert the relevant detective
- Either 10111 or the detective will alert Search and Rescue for assistance
- In the case of a missing child, alert SA Police as soon as possible. Provide a list of known friends and family locations.
Wilderness missing person
- Contact 041 585 1555 or 10111 as soon as possible
- Provide GPS coordinates if possible
- Explain, in detail, the situation and if medical assistance is urgent
- Provide details of the terrain and
- Leave a contact number and name
- If you do not know where you are, look for a marker that can be seen from a distance
- Do not wait for nightfall, if you suspect someone is lost in the bushes – contact Search and Rescue as soon as possible
procedure
- First, preserve the scene.
- Do not step onto or touching anything in the vicinity
- Try preserve the crime scene and stop others from tampering
- If it rains, or there is dew, try cover any evidence - without touching it
- Call 10111 or 041 585 1555 for immediate assistance
- Stop people from crowding the area and trampling possible evidence
- If needed, the evidence detection dog will be sent to the scent to comb the area for clues
- Do not smoke near the scene and try stand down wind - this will give the dogs an advantage when combing the area
- Do not allow anyone near any obvious evidence, be it a car, firearm, bullet casings - anything near, or on, the scene
